What is a neoconservative? I can assure you that it IS NOT simply a coded phrase (as Mark Levin suggests) that indicates anti-Semitism! It is a name that the neocons, Irving Krystol in particular, chose for themselves. As a former neoconservative, I know that mainstream American conservatives (who more than likely listen to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Michael Medved, etc.) do not distinguish conservatism from neo-conservatism. But make no mistake, if you study the ideological roots of this movement, you will recognize the traits of the neocon in the speech and writings of virtually all prominent ‘conservatives’ in the media. Back in the 1980’s, neoconservatives were extremely critical of Ronald Reagan. Prominent neocon and editor of Commentary Magazine, Norman Podhoretz, blasted Reagan for a soft foreign policy. In reality, Reagan was strong but pragmatic- we remember him for his rhetoric and his sunny disposition as much as his actual implementation of policy.
Many, many Americans can't conceive of a truly humble and DEFENSIVE foreign policy. The sad thing is, that most aggression has been STARTED by the US since WWII (not to mention the acts of war/blockades against the Japanese in advance of the attack on Pearl Harbor).
If you, as a voter say: "I agree with Ron Paul, except for foreign policy" I ask you to consider- that just maybe, could it be that you are wrong? That's the same question I asked myself in 2007/2008, and I realized that we as Americans take an effortless pride in the dominance of the US military. We love the high-tech superweapons of the modern age. But that's not a good enough reason to justify the killing done all over the world in our names! We must consider the true motives of the foreign policy technocrats. Their jobs are to sell you on fear of a foreign enemy who looks different than you. Is it not absurd that America (and the entire world) is willing to throw away centuries of progress in law and civilization for a threat that is less likely to kill you than a bolt of lightening? Should we feel so helpless, so insecure against an enemy incapable of changing our way of life, overthrowing our institutions, or invading our shores?
Dozens of neoconservative talk show hosts have shown up on the AM radio dial and gained prominence since 9/11. While most Americans have grown weary of the endless War on Terror, they hysterically warn of the dangerous Islamofascists. They feign outrage at any criticism of Israel, as if all Americans are responsible for her national security- no matter the cost in dollars or blood! Although neocons will bristle at any suggestion that America has become an empire, they revel in the apparent national greatness exhibited by US military dominance. But what does that military dominance do for you and your family? Just as importantly, what if you and your family happened to live in a nation that contained something that the US government wanted? In an age of the exponential growth in technology, where the capacity to kill large numbers of people becomes easier for potential enemies to acquire, is it wise to make so many enemies? Civilian casualties are inevitable during war in a foreign land (they say), but 9/11 was an inconceivable war crime.
To hear Limbaugh, Hannity, and the rest of them talk, we just need a man like Dick Cheney in the Oval Office! When it comes to the neocons, the most outrageous realization is that virtually none of these men ever served their country. They promote fear of an enemy that they themselves are (and have always been) far too busy and important to fight. The truth is, the neoconservative philosophy advocates for the worst kind of big government: the national security state. Now, they have absolutely no tolerance for childcare, food stamps, or the like- but the military-industrial complex is absolutely essential! (* Read or watch Eisenhower's Farewell Address, again if necessary. This man was no liberal commie- he foresaw the changes that were occurring in this country as they were happening).
One of my personal pet-peeves is the pejorative phrase "blame America first." The neocons constantly use this meaningless one-liner to try and discredit any criticism of the War on Terror, or the effects of US military adventurism. This coincides with Rudy Giuliani's argument in the 2008 debate, when he asserted that he had never even heard the absurd suggestion that American foreign policy might have had something to do with anti-US sentiments in the Muslim world. These attempts indicate that neoconservative leaders truly think the public so stupid, that they cannot separate the American people from offensive US government policy. Moreover, the charge implies that those who condemn the response to 9/11 somehow justify the attack! We're all sick of a huge, bloated, incompetent government- that's what the tea-party is all about! We must not draw the line at our foreign policy. We're broke, and our outposts of empire subsidize nations who could pay to defend themselves, and takes away from legitimate national defense expenditures. The US military no longer fights to protect the liberties of the American people (although they bravely risk their lives with that intention); they fight to maintain the international corporate structure, in our names!
In the years following 9/11, I suppose it's safe to say that I was a neocon. I supported Bush in 2004, more out of a strange feeling of obligation (and a disdain for John Kerry) than a belief in W. By the summer of 2005, the administration's lies had become undeniably apparent as the situation continued to deteriorate in Iraq. In retrospect, the Second Gulf War caused me an astonishing loss of confidence in government- and it has been a rapid decline ever since. Until the Ron Paul revolution began in 2007, I kept listening to the neocon talking heads while beginning to separate myself from their twisted views on society. Although they bemoan the open class warfare of the left, they push the notion that if you're not rich, you're either lazy or stupid. Levin whines about not wanting to pay for anyone's healthcare, Medved is a cultural fascist who makes it his personal task to judge the value of other peoples cultures and customs. These people are small-minded and exclusive. Who are their 2012 frontrunners: Newt Gingrich? Tim Pawlenty? Romney? Huckabee? Please! There is absolutely no grassroots excitement for any of these men, and without passion and excitement, it's curtains for our beloved republic. 2012 is about much more than defeating Pelosi, Reid, and installing a few more Republicans. How can we condemn all levels of failure in federal government policy, but demand that the military resources of that government constantly expand and encroach on the people's liberty?
Until the last year or two, it was nearly impossible to find a conservative voice in the mainstream media who did not support preemptive war, torture, rendition, and the like. Barack Obama, the Nobel Prize winner, has extended the Patriot Act, escalated the wars, and retained all the emergency powers that Bush illegitimately grabbed during his eight years in office. Whether or not you supported the Afghan and Iraqi wars in the first place, it is clear today that these overseas contingency operations are of no benefit to the average American. Let Obama have the whole mantle of big government, and let us defeat it! The permanent, unelected US government has a far different set of national objectives than the rest of us. The bureaucrats entrenched in the national security apparatus, combined with their bosses at the Council on Foreign Relations, have no intention of defending US sovereignty. While our boys are overseas fighting turbaned militants in caves, the statists leave the southern border wide open for anyone and anything to come right in. We Americans must become more sophisticated in our understanding of political power struggles. Ron Paul is perhaps the only man in Washington who will tell you how it is- whether politically correct or not!
If your primary outlet for conservative news and analysis is Fox News, I'm afraid that you have been conned. Think about it- Fox Network just happens to be the place that broadcasts the raunchiest, most mindless entertainment on the digital dial. Sure, they demagogue all of the social conservative issues, and promote militarism and American superiority. But I have to tell you, the days of winning elections by being against gay marriage, Don't Ask Don't Tell, and even drug enforcement are about over. Although we may feel intense opposition to such things, the greater danger becomes the precedents they set for legislating morality. If we force our morality into the law, then we risk being subjected to the morality of others. Thus, we end up with this culture of political correctness that has crept in over the last twenty years. It becomes a sterile, corporatized society where certain expressions and subjects become off limits. The government loves this, as eventually certain political thought can be branded extreme; not because others don't agree, but because it's impolite to speak about it. Ever read about Crime Stop in 1984?
The system counts on splitting us up into two camps, the red team and the blue team. Their rhetoric can sound quite different at times, but the policy at the top, and among bureaucrats, is the same. The wars continue, the borders stay open, the federal government expands, the banks and mega-corporations run roughshod over us, and our Constitutional protections erode. The neocon talkers essentially agree with 80-85 percent of what Ron Paul has to say, yet they don't dare say his name unless they do so mockingly. They preach undying adherence to the Constitution, unless it gets in the way of some national security objective. Upon listening to Dr. Paul's ideas, I learned that is was the neocons who were the blustering hypocrites. Why won't they criticize the Federal Reserve, without which the massive welfare state would never have been possible? Why won't they recognize the undue influence of the foreign lobbyists, the Bilderbergers, the CFR, and the Trilateral Commission? Why won't they call out the criminal Wall Street banking interests? Why won't they lay out the naked corruption of the United Nations, and outline its infiltration into the bureaucracy. Their plans are on paper, and if you give a damn about that flag, you'll inform yourselves of what has transpired and what is set to come!
Think for yourself, conservatives! Is it conservative to spend our dwindling treasure and the blood of American youth for empire? Is it Christian to torture, occupy, and oppress? Remember:
Terrorism is the war of the poor, while war is the terrorism of the rich.
Our sons and daughters deserve better than to be sent to foreign lands as occupiers. Are those who fight the foreign invaders not in the right? Or is it different because we're so good, because we are America? Would you not risk your life to repel a foreign invader of our nation? Would you not work to sabotage their every tactical objective? The people of the United States have no greater threat to their liberty and security than their own federal government, which already demonizes its opposition, no matter how harmless and peaceful. They already possess a highly funded and deeply entrenched Homeland Security bureaucracy and domestic intelligence apparatus. And now they have a permanent Homeland Brigade with up to 400,000 soldiers set up for deployment in America in the event of any proclaimed emergency. In the event of such an emergency, any passive resistance or self defense will be labeled as terrorism. Where are you on this issue, Mr. Limbaugh, Mr. Hannity, Mr. O' Reilly? Dead silent.
Why do the neoconservative pundits hate Ron Paul so much? This video might help explain, as the Congressman lays out the truth about neoconservative intellectual roots.
