Rand Paul seems to be working right past the coalition to win the Republican nomination, onto to a national coalition to win the Presidency! Unfortunately for us lowly rEVOLutionaries, this does not appear to be a particularly libertarian revolution- particularly when addressing evangelical audiences. The Senator has been a prominent voice for answers in the wake of the Benghazi, IRS and AP government surveillance scandals. Sen. Paul will next be visiting New Hampshire in hopes of gaining support above and beyond the 2nd place (23%) finish his dad received. Rand Paul has certainly traveled around to early primary and caucus states in years past, but his latest trip to Iowa marks perhaps the kickoff of the unofficial 2016 campaign process. Senator Paul may be the first prominent contender to headline a state GOP function in the crucial first in the nation caucus state. And he has other trips already scheduled for New Hampshire and South Carolina in the next four-to-six weeks. This weeks coverage update contains in-depth discussion about the issues, as Sen. Paul engages the Iowa media and meets with potential voters. I thought I'd re-post this speech in its entirety, since the previous version from last week's Rand Watch had some audio processing problems. Senator Rand Paul was the keynote speaker at the Iowa Republican Party’s Lincoln Dinner at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center in Cedar Rapids.*In his remarks on the investigation into the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on September*11, 2012, he criticized how then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton performed her duties. He also focused on the need for comprehensive immigration reform. Dr. Paul was introduced by the Iowa GOP's chairman David Fischer, a key official in the Iowa Ron Paul 2012 campaign. Sen. Rand Paul had one of his quietest news weeks in the last several months, with most of the coverage being hit pieces linking the Senator to his no compromise stances on civil liberties issues. It seems to me that the Democrats, and the powers that be in general, will eventually orchestrate a scenario wherein the Senator will be forced to side decisively with libertarians or conservatives. No issue can accomplish this like unrest in the middle east that could potentially involve Israel. Dr. Paul's libertarian bona-fides have taken a serious hit with is recent statements regarding drones. If you have been following the coverage, it seems that the liberals have made the Senator enemy #1, social conservatives are becoming increasingly skeptical, and libertarians have no choice but to be cautiously optimistic. I searched far and wide, but the following is all that I found in the way of interviews, speeches, and media coverage. Rand Paul 2016 Watch - April 21st thru April 27th

It's really incredible how many of the mainline conservative radio hosts have embraced libertarian thought over the last several months. In fact, many of these pundits have come out critically against Rand Paul for his perceived waffling on the drone issue! Not long ago, the mere mention of due process and civil liberties received scorn from conservative hosts and their radio audiences, who labeled such rhetoric as being soft on terror/soft on crime. Rand should be commended for his intense media schedule, as it seems he must be a regular guest on at least 15-20 different programs (which he appears on each, at least once every week or two)! Senator Paul spent much of the last week on the defensive after his interview with Neil Cavuto on Wednesday, in which he gave some viewers the impression that he condoned the use of drones against Americans suspected of committing violent crimes. From what I can tell, the Senator merely made the same argument about law enforcement's use of force against an armed criminal that he has been making since the filibuster. This seems like a media-manufactured controversy, but even Drudge and other right-of-center pundits have called Rand's statement a flip-flop. You'll have to give it a listen and decide for yourself. Rand Paul 2016 Watch - April 8th thru April 14th

Rand Paul dominated political talk this week, as he took the message of individual liberty to historically black schools- Howard and Simmons. The left was particularly peeved (and publicly nasty) by the Senator's attempt to reach out to an unconventional libertarian constituency. The MSNBC pundits were particularly outraged by the Senator's divergence from the liberal's ordained version of historical events. Democrats=Good, Republicans=Racist, No? I would be willing to bet that- if they took a momentary truth serum- the Democrat operatives resent the fact that hundreds of black students came out to hear from the Senator. It was a sign that African-American loyalty to the Democrats may not be as impenetrable as previously thought. Rand could have just come to the universities and laid out the non-partisan pitch for liberty in all spheres, as his father did back in February 2012 at the Little Rock Baptist Church in Detroit (too bad he didn't receive 1/100th of the media coverage that Rand received). But for better or for worse, Sen. Paul instead made a gesture on behalf of all Republicans. Listen closely to the progressive pundits in the following audio: they have no interest in improving race relations in this country. They thrive because of a political climate of fear, division, and intimidation. Only a culture of individual liberty, personal responsibility, and social tolerance will take race relations to the next level- but then why would we need a massive federal government? So, it looks like Senator Rand Paul has pulled back his media availability significantly over the last week. After all, he's probably talked to nearly every pundit in the business since his historic filibuster. The doctor is under heavy scrutiny from all sides given his sudden media prominence. The liberal media is on the attack, as are the hardcore social conservatives- who were quick to pick up on what they viewed as his soft immigration, marriage, and abortion policies. Moreover, the Senator is not getting a whole lot of love from the libertarians, either. Since there were few interviews over the last week, I've posted some audio that I missed the first time around throughout the month of March. Rand Paul 2016 Watch - March 25th thru March 31st

Just because Rand Paul cut back on his broadcast interviews this week doesn't mean that he didn't make any news headlines! To the chagrin of the neocons and the advocates of right-wing social engineering, it is becoming increasingly clear that Senator Paul is an early frontrunner for the 2016 Republican nomination. Likewise, the usual suspects on the left are in total demonization/marginalization mode. The media is busy reacting to the Senator's most recent 5 year balanced budget proposal, his pro-life personhood amendment, and his plan for comprehensive immigration reform. But towards the end of the week, Sen. Paul has made yet another splash in the legislative process with a filibuster on the Obama administration's gun control initiatives. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be another old-fashioned talking filibuster, but rather a filibuster of the procedural variety that will require a bill to receive a 60 vote super-majority in the Senate. Ann Coulter (IMHO the modern day female version of Morton Downey Junior) has joined Bill Krytol on the attack against Dr. Paul's foreign policy of moderation, as well as his ambitions for higher office. Rand Paul 2016 Watch - March 18th thru March 24th

It should not be a surprise that after an incredibly positive week of media coverage for Senator Rand Paul, the doctor is dealing with a bit of liberal/neocon/establishment blowback in reaction to his rapid prominence on the national stage. Of course, someone will always be offended when a US Senator comes out to lead on virtually every debate of national significance! The Senator not only reintroduced his office's five year proposal for balancing the federal budget, he also weighed in publicly on controversial issues like immigration, marriage, and abortion. It seems as if the Senator is not interested in cultivating a narrow, partisan constituency- but rather putting forward solutions for all varieties of national problems. Therefore, it shouldn't surprise us that many of the individuals who held their tongue on the drone filibuster are coming out swinging on other issues of disagreement. Unfortunately, so many voters enjoy being pandered to and being told what they want to hear, rather than being offered actual solutions that could be the cornerstone for bipartisan compromise. Rand Paul's star continued to rise last week, as he brought together the liberty movement and the broader conservative base, and walked away with the once-coveted CPAC straw-poll victory! Now, of course, he'll have to prove that his apparent success is more substantial than that of his father. This week's Rand Paul Watch Update picks up where last week's ended, including some closing thoughts on the 13-hour filibuster. While Dr. Ron Paul did not attend CPAC this year, it's clear that the libertarian kids still have numbers and enthusiasm at the annual conservative conference. Sen. Paul showed the world Paul 2.0- no stammering, stuttering or disconnected statements on the stage. This man knows his audience, and he can deliver the message of reason. Most everyone on the right seems to be embracing Rand Paul, except the most hardcore national security chicken-hawks and the most socially intolerant in the GOP. By all accounts, Dr. Paul was the star of the CPAC youth movement that paraded across the stage. Sen. Paul called for a new Republican Party in his speech, a rebuke to the previous speaker, who said the GOP did not need new ideas. In this writer's mind, CPAC 2013 has been the first sign that Sen. Media Coverage and Analysis of Rand Paul’s Senate Filibuster

Rand Paul's 12 hour and 52 minute filibuster was a clear success by most measures, raising the national profile of the outrageous drone strike policy and becoming a true leader for libertarian-conservatism. The Senator received high praise from prominent voices across the political spectrum, with the exception of the most partisan Obama supporters, MSNBC pundits, and those who are somehow interested in the power of the Presidency/national security state. The most remarkable shift has been on the conservative side of the aisle, as it seems that the right is becoming legitimately more concerned with civil liberties and the Bill of Rights. Of course, this irony isn't lost on the Democrats. Obviously, media coverage of the filibuster has been vast and everything aid cannot be posted. But I will post additional coverage as part of the Rand Paul Watch update. Rand Paul’s Senate Filibuster Extended Highlights (3/6/2013)

On Wednesday, Senator Rand Paul took to the Senate chamber to filibuster the nomination of John Brennan as director of the CIA. The Senator used the maneuver to bring attention to the domestic drone program, and to receive a firm answer about whether the administration feels it has the authority to kill US citizens in America without due process of law. As you might expect, Sen. Paul used the time to raise many issues about US foreign and anti-terrorism policies. I attempted to sift through the nearly thirteen hours of audio to post the most compelling, insightful remarks from the rhetorical marathon. I had initially considered posting audio from the filibuster in its entirety- but who would listen to 13 hours of repetitive prose? Dr. Paul was joined by several of his Senate allies, most notably Sen. Mike Lee, Sen. Ted Cruz, and Sen. Ron Johnson (Sen. Marco Rubio made a brief, politically superficial appearance). As for the Democrats, only Sen. Ron Wyden came to the podium to discuss and debate the issue at hand- with the exception of Harry Reid's unsuccessful attempt to limit debate and adjourn the body for the night. For the purpose of this podcast file, I attempted to include some of the back and forth between Sen. Paul and all of the major speakers during the filibuster period. I tried to edit out repetitive arguments by the same speaker to the best of my ability. It seemed that Sen. Paul may have been somehow aware of when news feed were going live, so at times, he reset the argument for television coverage. Video compliments of YouTube User: SenatorRandPaul.

The past week has proven what a difficult road to the top it will be for Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky. Sen. Paul has been at the forefront of Republican politics over the last month or so- being a champion for nearly every conservative cause that arises in the news cycle. Yet, the Senator's decision to vote in favor of confirming Chuck Hagel as the President's Secretary of Defense has been met with scorn and outrage by some pundits. The liberty movement (myself included) had some negative feelings about Rand's original objection to Sen. Hagel- a man whose record and resume is far superior to any of the hacks who served for the Bush administration. No, Senate Republicans took issue with the man's rhetoric in regards to Israel and some unsubstantiated rumors. Nevertheless, I believe Sen. Paul made the right decision, as he knows the real fight must be saved for incoming CIA director John Brennan (aka Mr. Drone). You have to pick your battles- and I fear that the average right-wing reactionary will never grasp that. Sen. Rand Paul continued to make headlines this week, as the whole world begins to recognize that he will be a true contender going into 2016. The Senator made his supporters and constituents proud by returning over a half million dollars to the Treasury from his yearly office stipend- a practice that his father had famously done for years. I like to include some relevant discussion and analysis in these weekly media updates, as it can become a bit monotonous hearing the Senators talking points in interview after interview. Like him or not, Glenn Beck provides some of the best regular coverage of Sen. Paul's activities on the Hill and around the country. Ron Paul's most vocal supporters over the years are often silent on issues of the son- so this update is likely to contain a more mainstream, conservative bent than 'Politics of Freedom.' Sen. Rand Paul was busy making headlines, and the media rounds, non-stop throughout the last week. The Senator was tapped to deliver the tea party rebuttal to President Obama's State of the Union address- not to mention the conservative alternative to Marco Rubio's establishment-arian talking-points. But like Rubio, the leftist media wasted no time bashing Dr. Paul for daring to disagree with the savior-in-chief. Rand has seemingly been in the middle of every political squabble that has come up in the last several weeks- most recently including the Senate confirmations of the administration's nominee for CIA director John Brennan. After making political hey out of the 9/11/12 Benghazi attacks, the bin-Laden raid doctor's (Shakil Afridi) imprisonment in Pakistan and now the the nomination of Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense, it seems to me that the Senator is trying to be all things to all (conservative) people. Now, I'm all about fighting the good fight, but might Dr. Paul be biting off a little too much here? At the same time, he's fighting for hemp legalization, an audit of the Fed, privatizing the TSA, a balanced budget amendment/the Mack-Penny plan, and transparency in drone operation. And these are just subjects that Sen. Paul has spoken on in the last week or two! Giving the "tea party response" to Obama's State of the Union address, Sen. Rand Paul called on his fellow Republicans to be more welcoming of immigrants Tuesday night in a speech where he also sharply criticized President Barack Obama and his congressional colleagues for failing to reduce the nation's debt. Dr. Paul, who was critical of both Democrats and Republicans in his speech, urged the president and Congress to allow $1.2 trillion in cuts to domestic and military programs – known as the sequester – to happen as a step towards reducing the debt. Senator Rand Paul has not been incredibly impressive over the last several weeks, as he seems to be sounding more like your average disingenuous politician. He is still the most outspoken champion (elected to high-office) for the liberty movement, yet it seems that in order to expand his support base, he has otherwise undermined core tenets of the movement that his father worked to cultivate. I remain hopeful that the Senator's rhetorical choices do not seep into his policy vision (like the Iranian sanctions vote) and that Rand Paul will lead causes we support much more often than those we all oppose. The foreign policy speech at Heritage contained statements that his fathers would cheer and boo, at the appropriate points. Depending on an outlet's viewpoint, the press reacted to the speech by saying that Rand Is More Like Father After All and Is Not His Dad after taking in the same remarks. Not surprisingly, it is the neoconservative policy wonks who are the most offended by Dr. Paul's call for a third way. A Constitutional Foreign Policy - Rand Paul’s Speech at Heritage (2/6/2013)

On Wednesday, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) spoke at The Heritage Foundation about his vision for foreign policy and the rise of 'radical Islam'. I view this speech as a reasoned attempt towards a more moderate stance on foreign affairs (which is surely lacking in the Congress). This writer resents the Senator's synching to neocon talking points, but I suppose we should be used to that by now. Most likely, Sen. Paul's remarks will offend his father's supporters for being too hawkish, while being too moderate for the Santorum/Gingrich voters in the GOP. But, hey- you've got to start somewhere!

This is the first post in the return of the Rand Paul weekly audio updates- now geared towards the 2016 elections. Every Sunday or Monday, I'll release a new block of audio specifically including the Rand Paul speeches, interviews, and other news and coverage NOT INCLUDED in the regular 'Politics of Freedom' update posted in the previous days. The Senator's most important news and commentary will remain in that weekly update. This file will be a Rand Paul overflow of sorts, as it seems to me that Sen. Senator Rand Paul asks: Is 1984 Now?

Despite the GOP's disappointing showing in last week's elections, Dr. Rand Paul has certainly returned to Washington with a purpose. On Tuesday, the Senator released a video message via his YouTube channel entitled, Is 1984 Now? The Senator considers the deceptive nature of US politics, and a few of the many ways George Orwell's dystopian novel rings true in the context of legislation, and the modern national security state. You should see the video, itself- which contains imagery that brings to mind Orwellian concepts like crimestop, doublethink, and totalitarian government. This video is sure to go viral- could it be the opening salvo in a 2016 campaign? This is not the only news Sen. Paul has made already this week- so stay tuned for more!

Ron Paul Tribute, Rand Paul speaks at Republican National Convention (8/29/2012)

Rep. Ron Paul did have an informal presence at the RNC in Tampa. Unfortunately, an unedited speaking slot was not part of the festivities. Instead, the party opted for a video tribute that was shown to the delegates on the floor of the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Wednesday. Prominent tea party Republicans like Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Jim DeMint, and Sen. Mike Lee offered complimentary words about the Congressman's many years of service. Later, Sen. Paul spoke to the convention-goers about conservatism and what this election means to America. Senator Rand Paul Responds to Endorsement Critics

Ron Paul still remains silent about the campaign and why things were done the way they were, but Rand Paul has come out swinging in defense of his decision to endorse Mitt Romney. The Senator has a bad habit of pointing out abhorrent behavior (or language on certain message boards) and smearing all of his critics with the actions of others. Dr. Paul's prickly response was perhaps not what the movement was interested in hearing, but in reality, the endorsement is one of the most ceremonial of gestures. Sen. Paul continues to stick his neck out for the cause of liberty on a constant basis, and the included interviews in this file remind us of some of the important work he is doing. Ron Paul Concedes Nomination, Rand Paul Endorses Mitt Romney - Supporters React

We all knew that it would take an extraordinary set of circumstances for Ron Paul to become the next President of the Unites States, but it's a shame that the campaign has to end like this. I'm concerned that the way the campaign has operated in the last several months, and the subsequent endorsement of Mitt Romney by Rand Paul, could potentially undermine Dr. Paul's legacy (and our movement's cohesion) in the future. All kinds of theories have been put forth over the last few days to try and explain how we got to this point. This audio file contains additional coverage of the Rand Paul endorsement and the current state of the movement, along with commentary from many different voices affiliated with the r3VOLution. Some are being way too harsh in their critique of the situation- using words like "sellout" or "betrayal." The situation is only exacerbated by Dr. Paul's virtual silence over the coarse of the last month, and the campaign's poor communication with their supporters. We all want answers, and I'll continue to update the podcast as long as financially possible.
